Karen Soeken lives in Ellicott City, Maryland, with her husband Don and they have two children and six grandchildren. She is a graduate of Valparaiso University and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in Measurement and Statistics. Karen retired from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 2006 and is now Professor Emeritus. Although retired, she continues to serve as a statistical consultant to several organizations. In her congregation, Karen serves as Stephen Ministry Leader and for many years has taught Crossways and other adult classes. In addition, she is involved in the Prayer Shawl ministry and in LWML, most recently at the national level. She formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Southeastern District LCMS and the Pastoral Leadership Institute and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR). Her free time is spent on family history, genealogy, and reading.
